The purpose of a comprehensive evaluation is to gain information to better understand an individual’s strengths and weaknesses or current symptoms, make diagnostic decisions, and aide in treatment planning.
Perhaps your child’s teacher has expressed concerns with your child’s behavior or academic success.
Your pediatrician may have recommended the need for further testing regarding autism or ADHD.
You may also desire to seek support if your child is having irregular tantrums, difficulty with completing daily activities due to issues with emotional regulation or focus, or noticing signs of anxiety or depression.
More information can be provided about your child’s symptoms after your child has been through a traumatic event or life transition such as foster care or adoption.
It may be that you are seeking a second opinion on a previous diagnosis, need a re-evaluation to update paperwork, or updated information of symptoms to aid in medication management.
Whatever challenges you may be facing, a comprehensive assessment can help with finding a path forward.

Yes! Virtual appointments are available across Alabama and the Tennessee Valley. My hope is to provide flexible options for parents and expand access to quality psychological services to those who may otherwise not have a provider near them.
Virtual appointments are available for initial intake, assessment and therapy, as well as for parent and school consultation meetings. However, testing must be completed in person.

Both private and school based evaluations can help get more information about your child’s current functioning.
However, only a private evaluation can provide diagnoses and individualized recommendations for outside of school.
An educational evaluation with your school will focus mostly on academics and determine if your child is eligible for special education services under the 13 disability categories set forth by IDEA.
A private comprehensive evaluation will provide more detailed information about symptoms across areas of functioning including academics, daily living, social skills, behavior, mood, etc. and can result in a diagnosis and recommendations for school, home, and other therapies.
Both private psychologists and school teams can work together to build on each other’s evaluations to answer questions about how to best support your child. As a Nationally Certified School Psychologist, I am well versed in collaborating with school teams and advocating for appropriate school evaluations and supports with parents through consultation services.

Intake interview and results conversations can be easier on parents to complete without their child present due to some sensitive topics and distractions. However, child clients are welcome in meetings if childcare is an issue.
Clients 16 and older are required to be present at their intake and results appointments due to Alabama’s medical age of consent.

Testing can seem daunting to some, but it’s my goal to make the assessment process easy and relaxed. Evaluations will entail some activities such as puzzles, memory games, academic tasks, and interview questions depending on the individual clinical question. There’s no need to prepare other than getting a good night’s sleep the night before and having a healthy breakfast.
Evaluations typically take 2-4 hours depending on each individual’s testing plan. Breaks are always available and you can feel free to bring snacks or a comfort item to make you more at ease!

I do not prescribe medications. Of course, medication is not always a next step following assessment or treatment. However, assessment and therapy services can help to document symptoms and provide paperwork to bring to your doctor for medication management conversations based on current symptoms if you so choose. Referrals to psychiatrists can also be made when requested.
This documentation can help medical providers make decisions based on detailed up to date symptoms, make decisions about if medication is appropriate, determine what medications may be most effective, and provide medication management guidance for people already taking medications.

Please contact me as soon as possible by email or phone if scheduling changes are needed. General policy is advance notice of 1 business day for intakes and regular therapy or consultation appointments, and 3 business days for testing appointments to avoid fees.
These policies are not meant to be punitive but meant to ensure that appointments are up to date and available to families who need them as quickly as possible. This helps to keep the waitlist for services short and treatment readily accessible for you!
